Laser Safety Classes Explained for Production Managers

What Class 1 and Class 4 mean in practice, and what an installation needs.

Laser Safety Classes Explained for Production Managers

The source is Class 4

Marking lasers are powerful enough to injure eyes and skin and to ignite materials. The bare source is classified Class 4, the highest hazard class.

The system can be Class 1

When the beam path is fully enclosed and interlocked so no hazardous radiation can escape during normal use, the complete system is Class 1 — safe without eyewear.

On a production line

Coders on open conveyors are guarded with shields around the marking zone, sized for the product, with interlocks on access panels. A risk assessment defines what is needed.

Do not forget fume

Laser marking creates particulates and gases. Extraction at source with appropriate filtration is part of a safe installation.
