How to Choose a Thermal Transfer Ribbon

Ribbon chemistry, printhead type and substrate must match for durable print.

How to Choose a Thermal Transfer Ribbon

Three chemistries

Wax ribbons are economical and suit paper labels. Wax-resin ribbons resist smudging and suit coated papers and most packaging films. Resin ribbons withstand heat, chemicals and abrasion and are used on synthetics.

Flat-head and near-edge

Label printers generally use flat-head printheads; TTO units use near-edge heads that release the ribbon immediately. Each needs its own ribbon grade.

Match the substrate

Smooth films give the best transfer. Rough or treated surfaces may need a softer ink. Always test adhesion after the pack has cooled.

Size it correctly

Choose a ribbon slightly wider than the print and as long as the printer accepts, to reduce changeovers.
