Food Coding & Packaging

Best-before dates, allergens and traceability on film, trays, cartons and cans.

Food Coding & Packaging
Overview

What food lines need

Food lines change product often, run in dusty, wet or chilled rooms, and carry legal date and allergen information that must be right every time. Coding and packaging equipment has to be hygienic, quick to change over and tied to the production plan.

Typical codes and marks

  • Best-before and use-by dates
  • Lot and batch numbers
  • Ingredient and allergen panels
  • GS1 barcodes and 2D codes
  • Case and pallet labels
Challenges

What matters most

01

Frequent changeovers

Short runs and many SKUs make manual message entry risky. Central job selection sends the right date, lot and allergen text to every coder.

02

Harsh environments

Flour dust, washdown and cold rooms call for sealed printheads, stainless cabinets and inks that dry on chilled or slightly greasy film.

03

Flexible packaging

Most food is packed in film. Thermal transfer and laser coders mount inside baggers and thermoformers to print before the pack is sealed.
