Getting Ready for 2D Barcodes at Retail

What changes on the packaging line when a 2D code joins or replaces the linear barcode.

Getting Ready for 2D Barcodes at Retail

What is changing

Retailers are equipping checkouts to read 2D codes such as GS1 DataMatrix and QR codes carrying a GS1 Digital Link. These hold the GTIN plus batch, expiry and other data in a small space.

Static versus dynamic

A static 2D code can be part of the printed artwork. Adding batch and date makes it dynamic — it must be printed on the line, which is a coding task.

Printing requirements

Dynamic 2D codes need higher resolution and tighter process control than a date code. Laser, TIJ and TTO are the usual choices; CIJ can print them at lower densities.

Verification

Because the code will be scanned at the checkout, inline cameras should confirm that each one decodes and meets grade.
