Tape
Pressure-sensitive tape is easy to apply, easy to open and works on dusty or recycled board. Tape heads are simple and inexpensive.
Hot melt
Glue bonds the flaps directly, giving a strong, tamper-evident closure with no plastic tape on the board. It has a lower cost per case at volume but needs a melter and nozzle maintenance.
Which to choose
Low and medium volumes with varied cases favour tape. High-volume lines, cold-chain cases and retailers that prefer tape-free packaging favour hot melt.
